Category:Windows-only games(Newser) – A devastating neighborhood in the West Bronx is about to get a whole lot more expensive—and this is no abstract thought exercise: The 1.5-mile walk between four subway stops will require $300 million in infrastructure improvements, and will likely not be completed for at least a year, the New York Post reports. Construction is scheduled to begin by summer of next year, officials say. "This project is a commitment to the future of the West Bronx," a new business development agency told the Bronx Network last week, saying it "has the potential to be a catalyst for the transformation of a long-neglected part of our city."
The $125 million first phase of the project includes a 32-acre park (a former sewage treatment site) in the neighborhood, as well as job training and adult education opportunities, and a "signature development project," the Post reports. Still, residents fear that the project could change the character of the area. "It's not going to be good for us," said a resident. "The West Bronx is very tight-knit. They don't want outsiders. They want to preserve the neighborhood." The city has already spent $7.5 million on the first phase, and officials are looking for private investors for the rest of the project.
