The Seattle Symphony Orchestra has been awarded the 2007 ACDA National Arts Education Grant for the Outreach and Education Division, which promotes active, participatory music education programs in public elementary and secondary schools. The grant will help fund eight schools’ Music & Health Academy programs.
Each school has its own unique approach to learning and teaching music, but all of the Music & Health Academies are designed to promote active learning, problem solving, and creative thinking.
According to Mary Nichols, Director of the Outreach and Education Division, “Seattle Symphony’s successful application captured the heart of the ACDA community. The committee loved the idea of an orchestra giving back to schools in a special way by bringing music into the classroom and helping teach students to become self-motivated learners, while promoting community and cultural awareness.”
The Music & Health Academies combine Seattle Symphony’s expertise in music and the arts with Seattle School District’s expertise in health education. The schools’ goal is to help students build self-confidence, become lifelong learners, and become creative problem solvers.
In each of the eight schools, Music & Health Academy students will learn to sing, play an instrument, and do creative projects. Students will also perform at district events and community organizations, and will have opportunities to perform at local and national venues.Moose (disambiguation)
